Prismatic Layers
In a quest for the perfect name, I did some research about conch and sea shells in general. One phrase struck a cord – prismatic layers. Basically a shell is calcium carbonate which brings to mind a white gray chalky looking mineral supplement, or maybe the white skeletons of long dead corals washed up on the beach. “Prismatic layers” aptly describes the hues of my Queen Conch shells.

Chogogo

Chogogo
Chogogo is the local name for flamingo. This flamingo searches the water’s surface in the dimming light of evening. The heat of the day is over and the turquoise waters have darkened.

Sunset Brandaris

Sunset Brandaris
Boats gently rock in the calm ocean as the sun sets beyond the tip of Bonaire. The outline of Brandaris in the north of the island can still be seen in the distance. The sun sets in the clouds gathered at the horizon with a fire like glow but the sea has already cooled to dusk.

Pristine

The crash of the waves, the turquoise of the ocean, and the white of the coral beach make it Pristine. Standing at the long abandoned slave hut, a reminder of a cruel past, and yet the scene is almost idyllic. No sounds of people or traffic mar the feeling. Take a deep breath, and breathe…

The simple design and contrasting colors which make up a slave hut has always attracted my eye. Visitors to Bonaire oooh and aaah when they see them. It is hard to imagine how harsh life must have been for workers in the solar salt pans.

Fishing Lessons

The adult Brown pelican glides across the ocean in search of fish schools. Once found he sharply dives, plummeting into the water to scoop up a beak full of water and hopefully a fish dinner. An adolescent pelican flounders in the surf after an unsuccessful dive.

Nooks and Crannies

A large square piece these shells truly have presence. Close up the forms are abstract, yet from further back the lights and darks become the nooks and crannies in a pile of conch shells.

Blue Wall

A companion piece to On the Edge, Blue Wall takes in the view at the horizon where gulls congregate. In the distance, a thin line of the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire separates sea from sky. The colors of the sea are mimicked in the discolorations of the cement wall.
