Lac Cai is the final resting place for thousands of conch shells. Once harvested by local fishermen, the shells remain as testament to the life style of generations past. Conch is now a protected species on Bonaire.

A baby iguana barely 5 inches long holds statue still beneath the shade of a spiny tree. The bright neon green is a surprisingly good color to camouflage this little creature from its predators. As the iguana grows the bright green will fade to be replaced with bars of deep green and gray.

Bonaire’s is one of the few remaining breeding grounds for the Greater Flamingo. Deep in the salinas (salt pan) the flamingos seek quiet and seclusion to build a rocky nest and lay their eggs. The parents will take turns flying to Venezuela to feed during the day.

The white slave huts sit on the sea’s edge along the southern end of Bonaire. The slaves sheltered in the huts at night during their workweek in the salt pans. Their families lived in Rincon. They would walk there only on the weekends. Slavery ended on Bonaire in 1863.

A mother donkey is keeping watch over her 10 day old baby. A baby donkey is covered in very soft fuzzy fur. Most babies are quite a bit darker than their parents maybe to be better hidden within the shadows of a bush. This mother and baby live at the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire.

The deep facial mark matched with the pinkish purple scales of the Creole Wrasse is a very distinctive fish on the reef. Schools will migrate pass the reef slope in an endless train of fish. These fish have stopped at a cleaning station to allow a juvenile Spanish Hogfish the opportunity to pick out the parasites from inside their gills.
