There and back again…

There and back again…
Born and raised in New Hampshire, I spent the last 19 years living on the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire. I found the vibrant colors and dramatic creatures of Bonaire to be inspirational. The brilliant Caribbean light bouncing off the intense Bonaire colors – mustard yellow houses, neon green iguanas, turquoise water, coral pink flamingos, the incredible purples of the salt pans against the white mountains of salt.

Now I am living in New Hampshire and back to the changing of the seasons; the rich colors of fall, deep snow and long nights of winter, the burst of life in spring, and the deep lethargic hazy afternoons of summer. Just as I brought a bit of New Hampshire to Bonaire (imagine rolling out Christmas cookies in 90-degree heat), now I will bring a bit of Bonaire back with me. There I found my voice, my passion for painting nature portraits, a close-up view of animals, birds, flowers, and shells. Now I am looking for the voice that called me home in the small towns, stone walls, ever present granite, vistas with ponds, lakes and rivers around every bend.

Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeet
Always a fan of any bird, this amazing Rainbow Lorikeet has one of the brightest combination of colored feathers – turquoise, lavender, purple to black, orange, green to yellow. I met this particular bird in an aviary where you could feed him from a paper cup of nectar. The trick was fending off the flock that descended upon the visitors when it was feeding time.

Take Flight

Take Flight by Linda Richter
Take Flight

Take Flight
Serene and peacefully, the sun was raising beyond the low hills of Bonaire. Parent and child pairs of flamingos took flight at dawn from Slagbaai behind the plantation house. We had camped overnight in the Washington Slagbaai National park which gives an amazing opportunity to experience the daily life cycle in the salines.

Turtle Ballet

Turtle Ballet by Linda Richter
Turtle Ballet

Turtle Ballet
Graceful underwater, the Green sea turtles of Bonaire seem to glide with gentle motions of their flippers. A subtle twist and they soar away into the depths. If a snorkeler or scuba diver comes to a stop, a curious sea turtle has been known to approach, maybe trying to figure out what oddity has entered the ocean.

North from Aquarius

North from Aquarius by Linda Richter
North from Aquarius

North from Aquarius
My family and I had just come up from a dive at a site called Aquarius. Underwater is beautiful but above can’t be beat either. Underwater the shallow sandy shelf extends out many feet; this gives the water an incredible turquoise color with shades of emerald and cobalt. Past the shelf, it drops off into the depths and the deep blue takes over.

The first panel is just the beach and sea. Far in the distance, the highest point on Bonaire, Mt Branderis, can be seen in the middle panel. In the third panel, the land curves around with a narrow belt of sand and coral rock. The panels are individually framed in a black metal. Only sold as together.

Purple Callas

Purple Callas by Linda Richter
Purple Callas

Purple Callas
Two color variations of callas – a deep purple and a warm rosy pink. Mini callas come in more than just white so bring on the color. Just one bunch of callas would not do. Still wrapped in cellophane and brought straight home from the yearly flower show. The plastic film reflects, transforms, and veils.

Yellow Orioles at Slagbaai

Yellow Orioles at Slagbaai
Less common than the similarly colored trupials, the yellow orioles (Icterus nigrogularis) can be differentiated by their yellow heads. Our little charmers are considered the sub-specie curasoensis restricted to the southern Caribbean Dutch islands.

I have never seen one on the southern end of Bonaire where I now live. We occasionally got them in Hato, about mid-island, but these particular birds were seen during a camp out in the Washington Slagbaai National Park which takes up the northern third of our island. They perched on the patio walls, or hopped along the tiles looking for crumbs, I imagine.

A red macaw has ruffled up his neck feathers and pulled his head back. His full attention is dead center and right on you. “Well?” he seems to ask, “What do you want?” He has not quite decided if you are bothering him yet.

The red macaw is a Red-and-green Macaw, also known as the Green-winged Macaw (Ara chloropterus).

Divi Exposed
The gnarled skeleton of a divi divi tree is dramatically lit by the sun breaking through the clouds. Young Divi Divi trees grow bent from the almost constant wind here on Bonaire. Yet the wind does not defeat them and they grow strong and thick with the years. The stormy sky is reflected in the deep color of the ocean.

No Richter Art 2013 Calendar and New Beginnings

Due to the passing of my husband, Jake Richter, from cancer in June of this year, I did not have the time and energy to do much painting and therefore do not have any new artworks to share. I contemplated creating a 2013 calendar using oldies-but-goodies, but time literally got away from me and I find it is mid-November with nothing to show for it. Those on my Christmas card list will find one small creation using four of Jake’s food images – no more hints than that, although I will post the image when Christmas is nigh.

I have started painting again with my return to our home on Bonaire. I have four canvases in the works – yellow orioles, a gnarled Divi Divi tree, a beach vista and red macaw portrait. I hope to reopen my in-home art gallery by the beginning of December. I’ve got another two on the drawing board, but not quite started with flying flamingos and some luscious purple calla lilies.
